Planning a summer home renovation? Consider testing for asbestos.

Did you know that in New Zealand, houses built or that have had work done on them between 1950 and 2000 are quite likely to contain asbestos?

Probably not the first thing that comes to mind when you consider a home reno. Here are a couple of points to consider:

  • Assess whether you need planning permission: If your project requires this, there’s a good chance the works will require a demolition or refurbishment survey to search for asbestos. Your contractor has a legislated requirement to ensure asbestos is identified and removed before any work that could disturb the asbestos begins in your home. This is to protect yourself and your family.

Homes built prior to the year 2000 require an asbestos renovation/demolition survey prior to commencement of works.
For small house projects: It's highly recommended that any suspected asbestos materials are tested prior to renovating to ensure that no asbestos is present. This will avoid cross contaminating your dwelling with asbestos debris and fibers that would put your family's health at risk and would also avoid accruing expensive clean up costs.
